A Night to Remember (1958)

Today marks the 100th anniversary of the most famous maritime disaster in history. The most historically accurate of the many film depictions of the tragedy is undoubtedly A Night to Remember (1958). Although the special effects were largely achieved by models and have none of the CGI flash of modern efforts, they are still very impressive. The straightforward documentary style and lack of a phony romantic subplot make this the one to watch. (If phony romantic subplots are your thing, may I recommend Titanic (1953) with Clifton Webb and Barbara Stanwyck, which is a little light on historic verisimilitude but much rougher on the tear ducts)
